Eline Brontsema 1988- Eline Brontsema specialises in making reduction woodcuts and paintings. Woodcut teacher, Classical Academy of Art, Groningen (2021-present) Guest lecturer Masterclass woodcut, Graphic Centre Groningen (2021) Member of Holt, Association for Northern High Printers (2018-present) Eline Brontsema (born 1988) graduated in 2020 with woodcuts and paintings. Through teacher Siemen Dijkstra, she came into contact with woodcut technique. For her prints, she uses the lost cut, also called the ‘suicide technique’, which uses a single plate for all the different colours. The wooden plate is systematically cut and one mistake during gouging can ruin an entire print run. Part of the plate is gouged away, so that the higher ago part picks up ink. The whole print run can now be printed with the first colour. The work then has to dry for a few days and meanwhile, the next part can be cut away. Then the next colour can be printed. This process is repeated until the print is finished, a very labour-intensive process. Eline makes detailed prints of the world around her. While the technique of the woodcut traditionally uses a limited number of colours, Eline uses many different layers of colour, creating painterly effects. The composition is very important. The rhythm of forms, the colour harmony and the play of light and shadow determine the atmosphere of a place she wants to depict. Hand-signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. Edition: 8/21 Provenance; collection gallery Wiek XX
