Roberto Lauro's sculpural work work is spontaneous and loaded with energy. The furrows, rifts, cracks and scars in the metal allow light to enter; it is then reflected back by the glass (which he likes to refer to as Athe soul@). His work is a clear statement of our times, uniting the intellect and the heart in search of the spiritual. Like the interplay of light and shadow, his sculpture combines fragile, transparent glass with solid, heavy iron. These colorful and luminous sculptures convey a powerful presence and emit vibrant positive energy.

While playing with a torn napkin many years ago, the artist suddenly realized that three-dimensional space was created with light. After experimenting with sheet metal and an axe to mimic the torn napkin, the result was his first three-dimensional picture. He then proceeded to learn to work with metal by utilizing the exposed Ascar-like@ welded seam as a compositional element. In his search to add Alife@ or Asoul@ to his creations, Lauro became concerned with the structural behavior of metal and glass. Well aware of the crucial importance of light, he knew the addition of glass would bring more light into his sculptures. This technique was not without challenges and had never been previously mastered.

With their jagged exteriors and translucent cores, the spectacular sculptures created by the synergy of metal and glass are powerful - yet fragile. Lauro has created and mastered his own idiom and proven that through the artist sheer will and vision, seemingly incompatible materials such as iron and glass can indeed be combined.
